Dornase alfa is used in cystic fibrosis, a genetic disorder where extra thick mucus is produced, causing breathing difficulties and common chest infections. As a result of these chest infections, lung cells are often damaged and genetic material (DNA) from these cells is deposited in the mucus causing it to thicken. Dornase is a naturally occuring biological substance that breaks down DNA and is therefore useful in reducing the viscosity of the mucus produced.Dornase alpha is inhaled directly into the lung through a special device called a jet nebuliser and acts on the DNA in the mucus in the lungs. This causes the mucus to thin out, allowing it to be easily removed.
