Generic name: Benzoyl peroxideBrand names: Triaz, Clinac BPO, Benzac W, Benzagel, BenzaShave, Desquam-E
Desquam-E gel is used to treat acne. It can be used alone or with other treatments, including antibiotics and products that contain retinoic acid, sulfur, or salicylic acid.
Significant clearing of the skin should occur after 2 to 3 weeks of treatment with Desquam-E.
Cleanse the affected area thoroughly before applying the medication. Desquam-E should then be gently rubbed in.
Side effects cannot be anticipated. If any develop or change in intensity, notify your doctor as soon as possible. Only your doctor can determine whether it is safe for you to continue using Desquam-E.
Do not use Desquam-E if you are sensitive to or allergic to benzoyl peroxide or any other components of the drug.
Desquam-E is for external use only. Avoid contact with your eyes, nose, lips, or throat. If the drug does touch these areas accidentally, rinse with water.
If you are sensitive to medications derived from benzoic acid (including certain topical anesthetics) or to cinnamon, you may also be sensitive to Desquam-E.
If your skin becomes severely irritated, stop using the drug and call your doctor.
Desquam-E can bleach or discolor hair or colored fabric.
Stay out of the sun as much as possible, and use a sunscreen.
When used with sunscreens containing PABA (para-aminobenzoic acid), Desquam-E may cause temporary skin discoloration.
The effects of Desquam-E during pregnancy have not been adequately studied. It should be used only if clearly needed. If you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant, inform your doctor immediately. This medication may appear in breast milk and could affect a nursing infant. If Clinac BPO is essential to your health, your doctor may advise you to stop breastfeeding until your treatment with Desquam-E is finished.
ADULTS AND CHILDREN 12 YEARS AND OVER
Gently rub Desquam-E gel into all affected areas once or twice a day. If you are fair-skinned or live in an excessively dry climate, you should probably start with one application a day. A visible difference may be noticed in 3 weeks, and the maximum change is usually seen in 8 to 12 weeks. You can continue to use Desquam-E for as long as your doctor thinks it is necessary.
Overdosage of Desquam-E can result in excessive scaling of the skin, reddening skin, or swelling due to fluid retention. Any medication taken in excess can have serious consequences. If you suspect an overdose, seek medical attention.
